Today, I'm going to be talking about the perfect business card. I'm going to give you five tips on how to create 5 Tips to Create the Perfect Business Card | How To Design Professional Business Cards !!! the ideal card for any situation. You're going to miss them. Let's just say I'm going to have fun with those ghost videos. Let's go ahead and jump into the content. Guys, these five tips aren't going to apply for every single one of you, and that's the key. Number one, you need to understand your purpose for the business card. Me, I'm a business owner. I have multiple businesses. When I use business cards and I go to events, sometimes I'm speaking. Other times, I'm simply sitting back in the audience, but I'm at a point with my business where I'm pretty selective about who I want to spend time with. So my business cards are geared a little bit differently. They actually say just simply "business owner" on them. They only have my email address because honestly, I am very careful about who gets my phone number now. That business card, for many people, especially if you look online, they'll say it violates a number of rules, but for me, it serves my purpose. It actually is something that has plenty of room that I can write on the back of it and it sends the message that I want to send. A good example, I met a guy named Chris Brogan who's at the New Media Expo, shook his hand. He didn’t know me from atom, but I knew who Chris is. Chris is actually one of the leaders on the internet, just for the last decade has been someone out there leading the charge on what the worthy internet is taking us and what it's going to do. He's got a very popular blog. Now, when he looked at my business card and he saw "owner", it immediately sparked his interest. I also mentioned at some point where he picked up that I was in the Marine Corps, so all of a sudden, he meets a Marine who's a business owner. It turns out he owns The Business Owner Magazine, so he was very interested. It turned into a guest post. Now, my purpose was to send the message and to connect with other business owners, people that are running companies that I respect and I knew that they would pick up on that kind of stuff, so my business card, number one, served its purpose. Now, let's look for you. If you're out there looking for a job, then that business card needs to in a sense send that message. You don’t want to be using a business card from some other company you used to work at. Instead, get a new business card that actually says -- maybe it lists some of your unique skills, some of the things that sets you apart, not a full resume because you don’t want the card to be cluttered, but you want to make that positive first impression. You want it to be memorable. That's very important because if you're memorable, you're actually referable. Oftentimes, you're going to meet somebody, give them your card, and to be honest, there's not going to be a connection. There's not really a way that they can help you. However, if you're memorable, if you're somebody that strikes into their memory, then you'll be able to -- in a sense, when they meet somebody and they're like, "You know, I just met someone that you need to meet," and they could pull out your card, they're going to be able to make that connection, so number one, focus in on the purpose of your card. Number two, keep it simple. Make sure the card is readable. You will not believe how many business cards I get from other people, and they're actually difficult to read. They're actually cluttered with information. It's actually even hard to understand who is this person and what are they doing. Make sure you use a readable font. Not everyone actually has perfect vision. A lot of people, they may misread it and they'll simply throw it away. You get a very short time frame. So again, make sure it's got your best contact information and multiple forms of contact information. Now, I just said that I violate this rule, but I do it on purpose to create barriers, but if you're out there looking for a job, you want to have a great email, a professional email. You want to have your phone number. You perhaps want to have your LinkedIn profile so that they can go see that. Not everyone is going to want to have their LinkedIn profile, but for you, it's probably going to be important because it's going to be relevant again to, number one, your purpose. The other thing is that some people just prefer to talk different ways. I like to talk on the phone. I also like to interact with people, believe it or not, via videos. Sometimes I send people video messages, but a lot of people don’t like to do that. They would rather type everything out, so that's why you also want to have multiple forms of contact so that the person that wants to reach out to you with an opportunity can reach you via their preferred method. The last thing about it is make sure it's clean. This is where you want to have room. [ I like to keep it clean because I do carry a pen and oftentimes, I can write on the back especially if I'm speaking to someone and they're really creating a great, solid impression. I sometimes write notes because I don’t have to remember it, then I can put that business card in my pocket. So we've talked about having your purpose, keeping it simple. The other part, number three, is make sure the information is accurate. I have actually received business cards in which the information -- they just had them printed out and the information wasn't accurate. This also applies if you are changing jobs or you're with a new company. Don’t give somebody your old business card. That may be all you have, but it doesn’t send the right impression, so don’t go with a pen mark. That's another thing I see, which is really bad, is that people just write -- they'll scratch it out and they'll write their new phone number. To me, that shows a lack of preparation that you're not taking this super seriously. And honestly, it's much harder to read, so we're going back up to the part of it being simple and readable. A lot of times, I can't read it or if it gets wet, all of a sudden it smudges. Guess what? I'm not going to be able to contact you. Please make sure it's the right company. It's one of those things oftentimes when we look at it and you want to make sure that's associated with you. So we've talked about purpose, simplicity, making sure it's accurate. Make sure it's professional. Now, we've talked about this at the very beginning, but look at the email. Oftentimes, people are using these email addresses like fatheroffivekids@aol.com. Now, that's cool. I'm having my fourth child on the way, so I respect being a dad, but when I see a business email like that, I'm wondering, does this guy actually take it that seriously? That's a personal email. Don’t use personal emails unless they look professional. Gmail is pretty good. The new Outlook emails aren't bad. The Hotmail emails, I know, have gone away, but there are a number of emails out there that are really long and convoluted. Try to avoid things. Go with something simple, something that's clean, something that's professional. I would avoid Yahoo! emails as well. Just the word "yahoo", if you look up what it means, it actually doesn’t have a professional sound to it. I don’t know. Maybe the company will rebrand at some point. The other thing is make sure that the actual card is clean. I know this should go without saying, but I've had people hand me smudged, dirty cards that they had in their back pocket for I don’t know how long. Honestly, I don’t want to even touch the thing. The other thing is have a system for handing out cards. What do I mean by this? Whenever I hand out cards, my right pocket contains my business cards. My left pocket on my jacket contains the business cards of others. So when I take your business card, I put it -- it depends on the gentleman. Sometimes, I often acknowledge the card. I look at it. There are some cultures where you want to acknowledge the card. Basically, it's a sign of disrespect if you put it away too quickly, but I always put them in my left pocket. Then I take out my business cards and hand it to them from my right pocket. The reason I do this -- and I've seen people hand me other people's business cards especially at networking events where business cards are going all over the place, so make sure you've got a system for it. Again, that's my system. Feel free to copy it, but that's the one that works for me. The last thing, and this is something I see again and again, is have plenty of business cards. I see people that go to conferences and after the first day, they have run out of cards. Don’t let that be you. Really plan ahead. If you're going to a conference with people, we'll take business cards. That's a good amount. A lot of times, people go there and they take or business cards. If you do that, you need to be really strategic in who you hand them out to. Otherwise, you're going to run out very quickly, and who knows? You could easily give out business cards in minutes if you're someone that's really working the room and meeting a lot of people. I know for me, because I'm a speaker, a lot of people want my business cards, so I'll simply put a small stack in front and people can just come by and grab it and reach out to me later. Another thing I do with business cards is I strategically place them in various points so that even if I mistakenly forget my big stack, I've got in all of my sports jackets -- I've actually got about to business cards in various pockets on the inside. I do this because I don’t forget my sports jackets and the business cards are always there, so that's one thing I do. Another thing is I carry the case. Actually, I have a very nice case, which if we go back to keeping them professional, looks very nice. It keeps them clean, but actually having the case, putting it in my luggage, it's actually on my checklist whenever I pack and I go places. Another place I keep business cards, inside my car or truck. Now, if I'm flying, I'm not going to have access to it, but a lot of times I'll go some place and by having to
business cards in the console of my vehicle, I can always go back out and grab those, and then be armed at least with those to 100 cards. [ The final place where I keep at least five business cards is inside my wallet. Now, sometimes they do get a little bit beat up and yes, we're going to violate that, but that's better than me having nothing. I keep them in a small little case, a little plastic case that actually does a decent job of protecting them. No smudges get on them, but they do get bent up occasionally. hello and welcome to another every Tuesday tutorial this week's to trial comes to you courtesy of Jodi who had an awesome question I thought this week and how do you DIY bulk print business cards at home and being a DIY or myself of Bulk Print DIY Business Cards Using Illustrator !!! course I've done this before of actually DIY single business card I've ever made for myself personally I have a little bit of experience setting these up and of course I just wanted to claim this is exactly how I would do and have done in the past everyone's ways are different but I want to show you and share with you today exactly how I do it and make sure you watch until the end of this video cheapest prints online because I've got a special surprise for all of you at the end so that's sad really get started I threw together this quick business card design and this watercolor texture that i meeting is part of my watercolor texture kit monument to which I leave a link to you wanna see other textures that are part of that kid that's what I used right here to put this very quickly business card together and as you can see we better front of the business card and hit the back of the business cards and I've also included a bleed in abilene is extremely important if you had any artwork that quote unquote leads off of the actual our porn so since this texture extends beyond the regular board I need to make sure that my front and my back of the card has a clean line in the way that you apply this show really quick so this is the standard size of a business card is three and a half inches by two inches here in the us- and in order to set this file up I did file new and all I did over here as I said maybe but two three and a half inches my height inches and then right here where it says believe this record in point one to five inches and that is the standard for a bleed on a business card and then if you toggle done this little advanced air right here just make sure color motor CMYK because of you are printing in whenever you print anything you wanna make sure color mode is set to CMYK ok so all that said I hit OK and then I had this are portrayed here in this red line is your believe live so leave the really important because when you're printing the sound you go to cut it yourself you don't want any weird like stray whites livers of lines because no one can really cut a line is so perfectly that you wouldn't even have a little airline of wait to see what she'd give yourself a little breathing room when you're cutting so this is what this little blue line allows the space race when a bit of an inch allows you a little room for error as you're cutting out so right now we've got the front of our business here we have the back of a business card and now I'm gonna show you how I set it up in Illustrator to print in bulk at home just using my regular old home printer and because I'm using a home printer that means my keeper side by inches portrait so we're just gonna come up here and go style now and we're gonna make sure right here I've got it set to letter which defaults to you in half by I do not need to bleed on this because I don't have anything extending beyond the edges of the sheet of paper and i wanna make sure once again you talk about on this advanced air that it is a mi que and its PPI which is the print resolution standard and they're gonna ok all right we just have a plain white sheet of paper here and I need my ruler so many commander control our own a PC in what they do that rulers right here if you don't have enjoyed showing up regularly introduce right click on here you can change your settings have gotten just good to go alright so this is how I do it which some people may think it's not the most mathematical way ever but it totally works for me every single time so we share with you my keyboard and this is my rectangle Tory I'm gonna do is double click and I'm gonna put in three and a half inches by two inches so we're gonna pretend like this is the seismic are so I have a three and a half by two inch and if I replicate the seminar hold all and as a dragon shift to keep it straight and if you do a little bit of math this link three and a half inches this link is three and a half and just so that seven inches and a half inches with my paper and I have space right here that I need space between the cards in the name of space on the edge that I need to account for got seven inches that make up the card and I'm leftover with one and a half just so if we do just some basic math calculator alright so we have one and a half inches and we have three areas that we need to account for between those two cards I made by by three when you do that it's half an inch so come back into Illustrator I know I need half an entry here happened right here in half an entry here so come up here I'm just going to click on this left click and drag until I had happened it and then release and then if I just drag this business card over to that edge and i click and drag again this ad should land rate or in this needs to be another half-inch apart that would put it for free here and if I drag this business card over once again I need this half an inch brings me to the edge of the page for this purpose so we've got our vertical spacing all set so if I copy the address rubber bands like them both of them holding all clicking and dragging holding shift to keep them straight and if I grab these again you can see comfortably I can fit eight cards in this is called an eight up comfortably I can fit a cards on the same house by inch sheet of paper so now I have two inches right here two inches right here to hear into here so that's eight inches and the entire length of my paper is inches and I need to account for spaces so many graphic calculator again ken and I have my say is three inches and we have basis so that's point six ok so they come back in here and this is where it gets a little bit funky but it's this is another little cheat of mine so men had and I'm a keyboard and I need a height of point six inches so I don't have to like figure all the math every time half an inch was easy but
little difference I'm gonna flip flop these get rid of my stroke and now I just have this block that's the right height so if I drag it to the top of my are portrayed here and then I can just click and drag and this is where I need to set my first business card that line right here so then I know I can just write the story here same thing again and then I can just drag this last guy this and now I can delete cards you know I kind of have a rough layout so now in a draw and my own trim marks because with the bleed we need to make sure we have marks to trim so we know exactly where to cut the paper so if I come up here I'm just gonna hit like the backslash key on your keyboard to rate your line to learn here just wanna make sure you have to fill on this you just wanna make sure you have a stroke and I usually keep it up the default one point so it's not for me to see and don't even worry about it bleeding off the page you just want to make sure you come close to the finding that touch this line otherwise it'll rent on your actual card and I just gonna set fees and then I can also select all the all ships drag these babies down here and that those are set and then I'm gonna come over here and do the exact same thing alright last thing we need to worry about is our bleed and like we talked about before we have an eighth of an inch so we can do the math vertically and we're going to use our little cheap for the horizontal areas just because we'll get really funky if we don't ok so right here I need to come back and even an inch which is half of a quarter of an inch is right there and that's all just help me line up exactly where my card goes ok now for this purpose gonna use metal she and hitting a manicure double clicking and now this time I hate to be any evidence reversed that directory here ok so now we have verbally lines and here in this is our templates if I come over here to my layers I'm going to label this trim and good and I'm gonna like this where create a new layer and this could be my artwork Claire gonna jump back original business card designs and we're going to export each of these as a high res jpegs I'm gonna go file export and she's gonna put it to use JPEG done here use our boards definitely make sure this is checked and make sure all so we save as JPEG that has a bleed the believe will be included on that jpg expert this time to make sure my quality is all the way up to maximum and that my resolution is and it seemed like a good ok and that's saved and I'm gonna jump over here make sure you're trimming guidelines are locked when you get hit while place and choose the front of my card and I'm just gonna drop this rain here since we dragged our bags we know exactly where it needs to go some level
shift drag both of these in the sport's really fastest dropping a man you know you have to eat up that's perfectly mathematically correct and if you want your back to be created as well make sure you unlock this otherwise are trademarks are going to carry over to know and then you're going to have this little icon over here for our board tool and as you're covered over you got the cross hairs on your border and hold Alt drag old ships and this can make a copy you're not going to get those vertical lines in here because we are guides relax but that's ok because we've already got hurt remarks drawn so now you can realize you're trimming guidelines come back to your artwork clear and you're just gonna select all of your car cards and then you're gonna come over here to your links tell you can get two lines by going when do thanks and you're just gonna have this little linkbutton right here in this will really think those in your just gonna have to do this eight times which is a little known but the back of your card so there you go so when this princess you're going to have your little trademark so gonna take your ruler and line it up with this mark in this market then you're gonna make your cut down here and they're gonna leave your ruler cross the stopping of bob you're gonna cut so then definitely do a test run before you really good paper to make sure you're putting the paper in the right way because obviously wants to its the thought you want to turn it around and flip it over the right way so you know your actual business card over you don't have one star that's upside down and once I that's right side out so just want to make sure that you do that Joe test run first make sure you've got your method all figured out and then you can print this out as many times as you need to and you get a business cards out of each sheet of paper that you have so this is how I would balk print DIY your own personal business cards and if you stayed with me through this little more boring but very very important and tutorial my gift to you is I'm going to give you this illustrator template to use for yourself so if you go over to my blog every hyphen Tuesday dot com also leave a link here you can go over there and you can download this in it will open with any version of illustrator cs or newer so all this work will have been done for you so all you have to do is drop your business cards and if your business cards are sized three and a half inches by two inches tall so if you enjoyed this tutorial please subscribe released a new tutorial every single Tuesday make sure to head over to my blog every hyphen Tuesday icon for even more tutorials and a bunch of design freebies including this freebie this week thanks so much for watching and I'll see you next week
